Hi Misti,

Everything is lecture format where you can just take notes and absorb the information. On the expo floor, there are more demonstrations and opportunities for you to take shots using your camera or try out their equipment. I myself take my laptop and equipment and keep it in my room. Then I can download my images at night. The one thing you don't want to do is overload yourself with a lot of equipment. Even with just a laptop and camera bag, it can get heavy after all day lugging it around.

Thanks Kevin, for these awesome tips! As a first time attendee, I really appreciate the work you put into gathering all of these tips together. You touched on this a little in your PDF, but I was wondering if the classes will be taught lecture-style where a notebook and pen would do just fine for notes, or will there be demonstrations I'll need my laptop and some camera gear for?

Thanks for your help!

Believe it or not, I learned Photoshop version 1! There was so little to it (although it took me awhile to remember what an alpha channel was) and I just learned all the new features as they were introduced. It's hard to believe how complex it is now.

Thank you for this article, Kevin. I have been designing in Fireworks since MX and have always liked it. Photoshop has it's advantages, yes, but when I started designing I was mostly teaching myself and I found that the learning curve was much smaller on Fireworks. Nowadays, Fireworks is my secret weapon. Most clients assume I used Photoshop, when in reality I used Fireworks and Dreamweaver.

As a retoucher I've been interested in the debates over how much is too much for some time. The idea of crediting images such as the Time cover shown above as a Photo Illustration seems like a very good suggestion. Back in the old days magazine covers were all illustrations anyway.

I think adding an illustration or retouching credit is worth considering. As both a parent & professional, I can see how retouched images can make an impression on young adults, and cause them to question their own body image. While it's one thing to say, "Well you know that photo has been retouched." it's another to combat the images that bombard kids today.

Not everyone has the benefit of being privy to the process, and what it takes to create the "perfect" image.

This is an excellent topic. Especially since "media" has created the illusion of "perfect people" via magazines (mostly). Even my 15 year old son cannot be convinced that the 8-pack has been "enhanced"...perhaps some burning, contrast, etc. So, with regard to creating unrealistic body expectations for youth...We need to be careful.

On the other hand, "Uncle Bob" photos...the ones that lay around the house or the family web album - I feel like eliminating Cousin Zachary's hormone induced acne is a kindness rather than a transgression, I've also patched a few lines out of NarNar's face as she smiles at the latest grandkid. Just softened the edges, pardon the pun, life can be cruel so it's ok, in my humble opinion, to cut corners where I can.
