InDesign’s Hidden Scripts

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

scriptsAdobe InDesign has a bunch of really useful scripts that many users may not be aware of. While scripting can sound scary, you only need to double-click your mouse to run a script.

In order to run the scripts you need to open the script panel located in Window > Automation > Scripts. Inside the script panel open up the Application > Samples > JavaScript folders until you see a large list of scripts. Inside here you will find a variety of scripts that will vary in their usefulness depending on your work-flow. Here is a selection of my favorites scripts that come with InDesign and how they work.

Add Guides
With this script you can choose to add guides to any side of your selected object, even if you have multiple objects selected

Corner Effects
You can finally control the corners individually on every box. Round any corner you like!

Crop Marks
Easily add crop marks to as many items on the page as you wish. They will even be put on their own layer. This is really useful when you need to mock something up for the client.

Make Grid
This is my favorite script. If you draw out a large fame and run the script, you can determine the number of frames are a created as subdivisions from the original frame.

make grid

These are just a small selection of the scripts that ship with InDesign. Explore the other scripts and you will be surprised at the variety that you will find.

How to create/use Twitter Lists

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

uwm-added

Twitter recently released a brand new feature called lists, which is saying a lot from a company whose main purpose is to keep things as direct and simple as possible. Lists are genius for their simplicity and power. Think of a list as a tag or folder to help you can organize your followers. For example, I have a folder for comedy, tech, design, c2gps, indesign and uwm.

To create a list, just log into twitter and click on “new list” in the right hand column. After entering the name of your list you can browse your followers and add each of them to any list that you like. If you come across someone who you are now following, you can add them to your lists as well.

Lists are a great way to see who other people are actively interested in. While some people may have thousands of people that are following, it is hard to see who are their favorites. When looking at someone’s profile I can see that they have a list of people that they took the time to organize, I can quickly browse and cherry pick the best tweeters to follow that share a similar interest.

Fixing a Photo Part 2: Sharpening a “Soft” Image

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

So you download your photos only to find that your camera has given you a bunch of “soft” images. Not blurry, but not that crisp sharpness that you were expecting. What can you do?

WAIT! Do not reach for that “Sharpen” filter menu!

Turn the background into a smart object (right click on the layer and choose “Convert to Smart Object”) and then run Filter>Other>High Pass. Run the setting around 10px and then turn the Smart filter blending mode to overlay.

You can adjust the effect by double-clicking on the smart filter. This adds some great sharpening to your photo and as a bonus it totally non-destructive!
